Patanjali's Sutras from the Yoga Practice Standpoint

SOME NOTES ABOUT I, ONLOOKER AND FREEDOM

The following is said in Sutras about “I”-consciousness and Onlooker (sutra 4-20): “[..] there cannot be a cognition of both [purusha - thinking-substance and chitta - thing] at the same time”. This can be observed experimentally, as there can be either an active doer (the “I” – centre of chitta-consciousness) or the Onlooker, a part separate from the incoherent mix of consciousness. Such incoherency is caused by the absence of “I”, the cohering point of rajas-activity, responsible for survival and optimal direction in the outer world.

When you begin practice – "I"-ness coagulates while Onlooker appears, as soon as you return to usual activity – everything reverts around.
Onlooker (and it is the fact of practice) doesn't produce fluctuations of the consciousness; therefore CVN (chitta-vritti nirodhah) means chitta-vritti avoidance (nirodha). During which remaining activity of the consciousness could be slightly visible. Additionally a release is possible, as arising gaps are filled with contents that are in turn born from samskaras (4-27).

In the beginning of practice one is permeated by CVN’s bija (core intention) and in the end arrives to Onlooker and accompanying deep quality of stillness (sa-bija samadhi, see 1-46). Then even "bija" itself becomes redundant (nir-bija samadhi, see 1-51), an automatic entry into operational state occurs: one simply sits on the matt and leaves the bustle of goal-setting.
Complete thought purity is a different story and is called “kaivalya”: "a sattvic mind, equally pure as Purusha itself and leading to absolute freedom (kaivalya)" (see 3-56). It’s doubtful that we, the people of society, need to enter it regularly...

I’d like to add that the state of consciousness with Onlooker is called “sattva” (light). The state with an active “I” is “rajas” (obscurity of mind). And the state devoid of both is “tamas” (somnolence, laziness or inertia). Curiously enough Indian philosophy doesn’t negate “rajas” and “tamas”, but constantly repeat their unbreakable unity. Hence the following proverbs: a lotus grows in the mud, society is the best teacher, and peace must be earned and so on.

Я ещё встречал перевод ниродхи, как restriction (ограничение) of fluctuations of consciousness.

Onlooker...

Perception in ordinary and in modified states of consciousness

Rather often we hear about afflatuses and fresh ideas (even of common use) that come during practice. Sometimes their flashes even disturbe the process of practice, that's why it is recommended to put a pen and a notebook near yoga-matt. Occasionally that can interfere with practice and thus it’s recommended to keep a pen and notepad next to the mat for recording them. Yoga Sutras say the following about such occurrences (see 3-55): “intuition embraces all objects and all aspects of objects at once without any order of priority - that is the knowledge born from distinction”.

Why is it so? Does Sutras explain this phenomenon? Yes, they explain, and exhaustively. This is an effect of Onlooker, who sees everything at once.
Why did this happen? Was this phenomenon explained in Sutras? Yes, it was and exhaustively. Such is the effect of the Onlooker who perceives everything at once.

Let's start from the observation that Onlooker (Seer) "have full capacity of seeing (perception), but forced to percept through the veil of mind contents" (sutra 2-20). In other words the mind-consciousness is the mediator between man's ability to contemplate and the outer world. It is mind content that is contemplated, and in the mind-consciousness the objects of the world are reflected in their turn. Do you understand the chain from the objects to Onlooker? Onlooker - consciousness - objects. Without any jumps, definitely through the mediator-consciousness.
Let’s begin by saying that the Seer has the full perception capacity but is forced to see through the veil of mental contents (sutra 2-20). In other words mind-consciousness is the mediator between person’s ability to contemplate and the outer world. It is the minds content that is contemplated where in turn world objects are reflected. Do you understand the chain of thought leading from objects to Onlooker? Onlooker – consciousness – objects. Without any jumps, firmly through the mediator-consciousness.

Ordinary consciousness possesses the ability to cognize the objects, but how does it do it? First, according to the clearness of that consciousness (sutra 4-15): "one and the same object is comprehended by two different minds in different ways, because their paths of being differ form each other". No doubt that troubled consciousness negatively influences upon the success of cognition process. Second, for ordinary consciousness everything happens step by step: the object without attention to it "dissappear" for consciousness (paraphrase of sutras 4-16 and 4-17). Next, chitta-consciousness tends to divide itself and generate so called inner dialogue: "consciousness, quarreling with other consciousness, produces the bad infinity of opinions and confusion of memory" (sutra 4-21). The endless discussion goes on and on, while different points of view conquer each other.
Ordinary consciousness has the ability to perceive objects, but how? Firstly, depending on the clarity of the consciousness itself (sutra 4-15): same object is perceived differently by two distinct minds as their way of life is different; in other words, there is no doubt that the unsettled mind negatively influences success in the cognitive process. Secondly, everything for the ordinary consciousness happens sequentially: the object without attention disappears from the consciousness (paraphrase of sutras 4-16 and 4-17). Furthermore, chitta-consciousness tends to divide itself creating so-called inner dialogue: “[..] an infinite regress from one thinking-substance to another thinking-substance as well as confusion of memory” (sutra 4-21). An endless discussion occurs where winning points of view are constantly changing.

Objects have definite structure, the essence of which is defined in Sutras in such a way: everything changes. To say exactly, the past and the future of any object exists really and differ only in the states of their elements (dharmas)(paraphrase of the sutra 4-12). "These dharmas in their essence are gunas" (sutra 4-13). There are only three gunas (may be heard as "go", moving): equillibriance (sattva = light, clearness), activity (rajas) and inertia (tamas). It's easy to see that in such object as man we can explain all his/her cyclic changes of moods and states. Let it be the first approximation, but it's true. It is through the guna combination and dominating of any guna at any given moment changes the object, being the holistic unity of it's elements. That's why "the only essence of all objects is variability" (paraphrase of sutra 4-14). It is the roll of gunas, changing each other. At least this point of view is satisfactory for the whole Indian philosophy. The main thing (practically) in this "dull" story is the localisation both past and future in changing (for ordinary consciousness) object. And only the tendency of ordinary mind to percept all in turn produce the past, the present and the future of the object.

Now then, for ordinary consciousness, we have the flow of signals from outer objects, and consciousness (chitta, mind) is constantly filled with them. Later it drops them into subconsciousness (as "samskaras"). But when the time of practice come, I-focus of consciousness dissapeares, the whole system relaxes and the contemplating aspect of the system (Onlooker, Purusha) comes in. Another law of cognition begins to act: "always are known the vortices of consciousness to its lord, the Purusha unchangeable" (sutra 4-18). What is more "the chitta for Purusha is cognised completely" (paraphrase of 4-19), it is seen in all details at once. Such is the quality of contemplating, deconcentration in contrast to sequential movements of attention. Let me remind you that Onlooker-Purusha sees not the objects themselves, but only the contents of consciousness, though He possesses the absolute vision (see sutra 2-20).

The presence of Purusha and contemplation imbues the chitta-consciousness and makes it still. Sutra 4-22 tells us: "the stilled consciousness takes its natural form, the buddhi", because during yoga practice the I-ness, the basic contracture of consciousness is absent (remember, that simultaneously these two - Purusha and chitta - are unattainable, sutra 4-20). Then objects, reflected in consciousness, are seen to the human system in totality of their elements, their past and future. Also consciousness is colored with its contents and reflections of objects, percepted earlier, but this color doesn't have the unnecessary twists of consciousness itself. The more or less correct mirror appears. Then "chitta-consciousness, colored with Seer and seeing, may apprehend all the being" (sutra 4-23). It apprehends all the paths of situations, plans, questions, gathered in consciousness, and it's logical that there appear ready and sometimes unexpected answers on the screen of consciousness.

The whole science is full with the witnesses of such work of consciousness. First, the stage of fact gathering, then the moment of retreat from the theme into the "nothingness", and next - the result, the flash of enlightenment comes... The scale of enlightenment obviously depends on the scale of our projects and intentions. But mechanism is the same.

Therefore, the practice of yoga gives a chance not only to improve our health, but also to understand in unordinary way (by oneself, without social patterns) the vitally important points.

На суд [cb] :

Objects have a definite structure; their essence is defined in Sutras as: everything changes. Or to be more precise, objects past and future are real and only differ in the state of its elements (dharmas) (paraphrase of sutra 4-12). These dharmas in their essence are gunas (sutra 4-13). There are three gunas (constant with the word “go” or “movement”): balance (sattva = light, purity), activity (rajas) and inertia (tamas = languor, darkness). It’s easy to see how these elements explain cyclic mood and state changes in such objects as humans. Even as a rough approximation it remains true. Object, as an integral unity, changes by a combination or domination of any particular guna in every single moment. That’s why the common nature of all objects is the variability (paraphrase of sutra 4-14), a successive ball of gunas. At least this point of view was satisfactory for the whole Indian philosophy. The main thing (from practical point of view) in this flat story is that for ordinary consciousness the object always contains both past and future. And only the property of ordinary mind to perceive things sequentially creates objects past, present and future.

Вот неплохой сборник английских переводов йога-сутр с небольшими комментариями: http://www.athayog.me.uk/sutra_ch1n.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Therefore for the ordinary consciousness there is a flow of signals from outer objects that constantly fill it (chitta, mind); gradually dropping accumulated experiences into subconsciousness (as ‘samskaras’). But when the time of practice comes, consciousness “I”-focus disappears, the whole system relaxes and contemplating aspect of the system (Onlooker, Purusha) arise. A new order of cognition begins to function: Purusha “is unchanging and always knows and is master of the ever-changing mind” (sutra 4-18). What is more, chitta is completely knowable to Purusha (paraphrase of sutra 4-18), it sees it in all the detail at once. Such is the quality of contemplation, inattention in contrast to sequential movement of attention. Let me remind you that Onlooker (Purusha) doesn't see objects themselves but only the contents of consciousness even if he possess an absolute vision (remember sutra 2-20).

The presence of Purusha and contemplation colours chitta-consciousness and makes it still. Sutra 4-22 tells us: ‘our stilled consciousness takes its natural form – buddhi, as during the practice there is no “I”-focus, the basic contracture of consciousness is absent (remember that both – Purusha and chitta – are simultaneously unattainable, as per sutra 4-20)’. Then objects reflected in consciousness are visible to the human system in all completeness of their past and future. Additionally consciousness is coloured by its contents, a collection of object reflections that it has previously perceived, but this colouring doesn't contain any unnecessary twists from the consciousness itself. There appears a mirror which is more or less free of distortions. It is then, when chitta-consciusness is coloured by Seer that perceives and by what is perceived, the mirror manifests all objects (sutra 4-23). It apprehends all possible situations, plans and questions putting a logical sometimes unexpected answer to the front of consciousness internal screen.

SOME NOTES ABOUT I, ONLOOKER AND FREEDOM
SOME NOTES ABOUT THE I, THE ONLOOKER, AND FREEDOM
The following is said in Sutras about I-consciousness and Onlooker (sutra 4-20): “[..] there cannot be a cognition of both [purusha - thinking-substance and chitta - thing] at the same time”.
Sutra 4-20 sais the following about The I (consciousness) and The Onlooker:
3. the “I” – centre of chitta-consciousness --> the I as a center of chitta/consciousness
4. the Onlooker, a part separate from --> the Onlooker separate from
То есть mix of fillings/components/elements of consciousness.
The incoherency is caused by the absence of the I, a cohering point of rajas/activity, responsible for survival and optimal behavior in the outer world.

After you have started your practice, the I collapses, giving way to the Onlooker. Everything comes back after the completion of the practice.
The onlooker (as a fact) doesn't produce fluctuations of the consciousness. Hence chitta-vritti nirodhah (CVN), meaning avoidance of chitta-vrittis. The residual activity of the consciousness could be more or less perceivable. Relief of latent deposits may also occur because the voids arising in the consciousness are filled with mental content (vrittis?) born from samskaras (4-27).

To be continued...
